A group of Trafford's distance young athletes travelled to London last weekend for the 128th National Cross Country Championships. The Championships were held on a muddy, challenging course at Parliament Hill Fields, the spiritual home of cross country running.
Marnie Mannion was the only girl in the group and she finished in a fine 188th place out of 433 athletes in the Under 13 Girls race.
In the Under 15 Boys, out of 164 clubs represented in the race, Trafford finished 28th team. In a field of 371 athletes, Colin Daly led the way in 66th place followed by Jack Wilkinson (120th), Mikey Kingston (288th) and Xavier O'Hare (299th).
Our sole representative in the Under 17 Boys event was Matt Sutton who continued his recent good form in finishing in 91st place.
However, top Trafford performances of the day were in the Under 20 Mens race where Richard Powell finished an excellent 19th followed by Danny Lawton in 40th.
Colin, Jack, Matt, Richard and Danny will now represent Greater Manchester in the UK Inter Counties Championships at Birmingham next month.

The final Manchester Cross Country League fixture was held on a relatively dry course at Wythenshawe Park.
First race of the day was the Under 11 Girls, where the Trafford team finished 7th, led home by Emily Wolstencroft in 27th place, followed by Sadie Mannion in 32nd and newcomer Lauren Howley 37th.
The Under 11 Boys were next and it was good to see 7 athletes finish for the club. Leading the way was Oliver Choi who ran his best race of the season to finish 2nd in the same time as the winner. He was closely folowed by Tom Bentall in 7th. Good packing by the rest of the team, Jack Ackers (14th), Zak Gardner (15th), Max Rarity (16th), Oriol Sala (23rd) and Jack Webb (29th) gave the team an excellent 2nd place.
Marnie Mannion was our only girl in the Under 13 Girls race and she finished in the top half of the field in 23rd place.
The Under 13 Boys finished 5th with Alex Bailey our top counter in 14th place. He was followed by Cynog Williams in 20th and an improving Joe Bentall in 24th.
Again, we only had one finisher in the Under 15 Girls race where Anna Baker was a solid 23rd.
We only had one finisher in the Under 15 Boys race and that was Jack Wilkinson who continued his current good form with a superb 3rd place against much older and larger opposition.
The final race of the young athletes programme was the Under 17 men. Trafford finished in 2nd team place led home with an excellent run by Matt Sutton in 2nd place, supported by Danny Shaw in 5th and Mac O'Malley 8th.
Several of the team now travel to the National Cross Country Championships in London next weekend.

Greater Manchester Schools Cross Country Championships

Several Trafford athletes had outstanding performances when the Greater Manchester Schools Cross Country Championships were held on a very tough course at Woodbank Park, Stockport on Saturday.
The top 8 in each race are selected for the County team with the following 4 nominated as reserves.
In the Senior Boys race, Zak Miller returned for a convincing victory with Danny Lawton producing his usual gutsy effort to finish 2nd. Matt Sutton just missed the team in 9th place.
No Trafford athletes made the Inter Boys team but Colin Daly (9th) and newcomer George Lilleywhite (11th) were nominated as reserves.
Perhaps the best performance of the day came from Jack Wilkinson who finished an excellent 2nd in the Junior Boys race behind the National Triathlon Champion. Also in this event Xav O'Hare produced his best ever cross country race to finish in 10th place.
The selected athletes now progress to the English Schools Championships at Blackburn next month where England vests are at stake.
