YDL Lower Match 3

Match 3 in this years YDL lower saw a return visit to Blackburn Harriers. We are very grateful to Blackburn Harriers for taking on this fixture once it became apparent that West Cheshire would be unable to host due to the lack of officials they could muster because of the fixture clashes with the Northern Championships at Sportcity and the Welsh u17 & u20 Championships.

As it was Wrexham were restricted to just one competing athlete. Without the determination from Blackburn that this fixture would go ahead, it would have probably been cancelled - so a massive thanks to George and all at Blackburn who made this event possible.

After the disappointment of finishing 5th in match 2 it was good to see Trafford AC back out in strength and just pipping Wigan to second place behind a very strong North Cumbria combined team.

Yet again the weather was less than kind, particularly early on in the day there was a lot of heavy rain and the strong wind featured all day. This inevitably had an effect on times, but didn't appear to dampen the enthusiasm of most.

There were lots of good performances, but of note has to be Jack Wilkinson, who is making a habit of dominating the u13b 1500m races. This was no exception, another dominant performance. We also had the sight and great excitement of Josh in the 3rd leg of the 4x300m relay turning a 15m deficit into a 15m lead that was just about held on to as Colin finished off the victory.

As ever our thanks goes to those who help us fulfill our commitment to the running of the event, those who help officiate - Linda (Track Judge), Peter (Timekeeper) &  John, Brendan, Byron and Margaret as the field team.

We are currently 3rd overall in this years competition, the 4th and final match is at Wigan on 13th July.

The English Schools Athletic Association website states

"The ESAA National Championships are the 4th largest athletics event in the World... staged each year. They have been televised live by SKY Sports since 2008.

Organised entirely by volunteer teachers, we bring together the best athletes in each County in England to compete for the honour of being the best athlete in the Country at their event.

Entry to the event is by virtue of athletes being selected by County Team Managers to represent their County. Prime consideration is given to performances at County Championships which are normally held sometime around the 2nd week of June, but other outstanding performances at other events may be taken into consideration.

Nearly all the UK Olympic Athletics team members have featured in the ESAA Championships, some other Olympic Team members too:"

So we are particularly pleased to have 15 Trafford AC athletes selected for this years competition - thought to be the highest number for the club since 1971

Senior Boys (u19)
1500m - Richard Powell

Inter Boys (u17)
800m - Chris Brown
3000m - Zak Miller & Danny Lawton
Long Jump - Jerell Marchan

Junior Boys (u15)
1500m - Jake Lonsdale (Lancashire)
80m Hurdles -  William Aldred, Rivaldo Brown
Long Jump - Josh Pemberton
Triple Jump - Delroy Wright

200m - Marie-Gaelle Foumena

Inter Girls (u17)

The home fixture double header in the YDL saw both Trafford teams depleted due to half term holidays, exams, illness and not helped by a BMC event at Sportscity on the Saturday night.
Consequently the overall results were not that good - 4th in the Lower League and 5th in the Upper League.
Having said that there were some very impressive performances by those able to make it and loads of PB's achieved on both days.
So well done to all who competed & thanks as ever to those who helped out officiating over the two days - Peter, Linda, Dave, Elaine, Rashida, Neil, John, Sue, Maryon, Bill, David, Lucy, Gavin, Emily & Eddie - your help is invaluable; and not forgetting Alan & Mary producing the results.

Next round of fixtures are:-
Lower League - Saturday 22nd June at Blackburn (note change of venue) - coach will be provided
Upper League - Sunday 30th June at Wigan

Hopefully all will be free of exams & holidays by then and we can put out full strength teams and better reflect the strength of the club.
