The first team fixture for this age group this season saw 42 u13's & u15's travel to Ellesmere Port in the Youth Development League.
This is a very young team with the vast majority of them being at the lower end of their age group, so it was really satisfying to see them perform so well and finish a close 4th on the day overall. The spirit amongst the team was great and boosted by Kim, still in her neck brace, making an appearance to support the team. There were lots of PB's on the day, far too many to mention individually, some of them massive, with Danielle and Sammy knocking huge chunks of previous times. One of the highlights of the day was watching Jamall, probably one of the shortest in the competition, take on all comers in the 100m and 200m and anchor the u13b relay team to a very close win. The willingness to do the best for the team was probably best demonstrated by Jack who happily chipped in competed in both the shot and the javelin - not events he's really cut out for! A great days competition, fine weather, great spirit amongst the team; strongly supported by a good crowd of parents. As ever our gratitude is extended especially to those who help officiate, without whom the kids would have no competition. So a big thank you to Peter (Timekeeper), Neil (Track Judge) and the field team of Mike, Brendan, Lucy and Margaret. Full results Saturday 14th June saw the final fixture in this years YDL (Lower) competition. Unusually for Wigan it was a beautiful day - ideal for sprinting and jumping and this was reflected in the performances - over 40 PB's were recorded by Trafford Athletes on the day. As ever it seems these days the sprint hurdlers got us off to a fine start with wins for Jameelah, Emily, Kim, Will and Rivi. Leila finished third after bravely picking herself up from a nasty fall and still finishing the race, so it was particularly pleasing to see her knock 0.4 off her 75m time for a new PB. In the sprints we also saw Rivi go below 12 seconds for the first time in the 100m - new PB 11.8. Molly (75m & 150m) and Jameelah (150m) continue to post new sprint PB's, as did Ronnie & Will in the 200m. It was also good to see Danielle, on debut posting some pleasing times. It was in the Long Jump pit that we really saw the benefit of the fine weather - six PB's out of six jumpers. Kelise in her first ever competition for the club went to the top of the club's u13 girls Long Jump rankings with a jump of 4.22; Molly went over 4m for the first time with 4.08m. in the u15 girls Zalika and Lili have been chipping away at their PB's all season - so it was no great surprise for them to continue in this vane and add 13cm & 9cm respectively to now stand at 4.75m & 4.54m. Delroy & Rivi both chipped in with new LJ PB's too to finish the set. In the high jump, Dominic marked his first competition for a year with a new PB We were a little short of middle distance athletes for this match, and the weather was far from ideal for distance running - but we still managed to get new PB's in the 800m for Colin, Brodie and Danielle, Again Kelise on debut was the surprise package, finishing just behind Danielle to take third overall and win the B race. Jack Wilkinson finished of a fine series in the 1500m, making it four wins out of four in this years competition, and each one of them by a good margin. The throwers were not to be outdone - Kelab had a very impressive day with 2 PB's (Discus, Hammer) and a seasons best frustratingly short of his PB in shot. Kim, relatively new to hammer, added nearly 5m to her PB. Delroy improved his Javelin PB. In the relays we had two wins out of three, u15 boys team posted a new PB - the fastest time by a Trafford u15 boys team for four years. We went into the match at Wigan with an outside chance of finishing second in the league, sadly it was not to be and we've finished third in the League this season. Team North cumbria will be promoted to Premier 2 and we'll be sorry to loose Wrexham as they will be relegated having finished bottom. We continue to be indebted to those who help out with the officiating - we can't stress often enough that, without their help and support these events simply would not happen. So a big thank you to Elaine & Dave (track judge & time keeper), Maryon (lead field official) and Julie, Byron, Peter & Brendan for their help in the field duty. It's also a good opportunity to thank all those who have helped officiate this season, particularly those without kids involved(!) so as well as the above - John, Sue, Rashida, Linda. Power of 10 results Match 3 in this years YDL lower saw a return visit to Blackburn Harriers. We are very grateful to Blackburn Harriers for taking on this fixture once it became apparent that West Cheshire would be unable to host due to the lack of officials they could muster because of the fixture clashes with the Northern Championships at Sportcity and the Welsh u17 & u20 Championships. As it was Wrexham were restricted to just one competing athlete. Without the determination from Blackburn that this fixture would go ahead, it would have probably been cancelled - so a massive thanks to George and all at Blackburn who made this event possible. After the disappointment of finishing 5th in match 2 it was good to see Trafford AC back out in strength and just pipping Wigan to second place behind a very strong North Cumbria combined team. Yet again the weather was less than kind, particularly early on in the day there was a lot of heavy rain and the strong wind featured all day. This inevitably had an effect on times, but didn't appear to dampen the enthusiasm of most. There were lots of good performances, but of note has to be Jack Wilkinson, who is making a habit of dominating the u13b 1500m races. This was no exception, another dominant performance. We also had the sight and great excitement of Josh in the 3rd leg of the 4x300m relay turning a 15m deficit into a 15m lead that was just about held on to as Colin finished off the victory. As ever our thanks goes to those who help us fulfill our commitment to the running of the event, those who help officiate - Linda (Track Judge), Peter (Timekeeper) & John, Brendan, Byron and Margaret as the field team. We are currently 3rd overall in this years competition, the 4th and final match is at Wigan on 13th July. http://www.thepowerof10.info/results/results.aspx?meetingid=81726 2nd Place for Trafford's Young Athletes A week after the Upper League, the Lower League (u13 & u15) got started. Fixtures for the Lower League are on Saturdays, and the Trafford Team made it's way to Blackburn for our first match in this revised competition. It was one of those days were the weather just couldn't make it's mind up. We arrived under very heavy and threatening skies and left with blue sky and sunshine. It managed to stay dry, but the main issue all day was the wind which affected all events - and never it seemed in a favourable way! We maintained the great habit that we got in to in the NYAL in the last couple of seasons and got off to a flying start by dominating the hurdles heats and were in the lead early in the competition. Team North Cumbria chipped away at us all day and eventually turned out winners, with Trafford comfortably in second place. It was great to see the year 6 kids in particular competing for the first time in this competition. Highlight of the day was undoubtedly Jack Wilkinson in the u15b 1500m, he may have been the smallest physically in the field - but he had the biggest heart. In second place, and 15m behind the leader at the bell, he fought back to catch the leader and then sprint past him in the home straight. The u15b 4x300m relay team (Josh, Mikey, Colin & Jake) proved to be as dominant as the u17b had been the previous week and blasted away to finish with an 18s advantage. As with the Upper League the week before, the result is testament to everyone who took part and did their bit for their team. Well done to all who took part. As ever our thanks has to go to those who made the competition possible, notably Linda Taylor (Track Judge), Rashida Watson (Track Judge) , Peter Snape (Time Keeper) & Sue Exon (Lead Field Official , along with the parents who helped with field duty and as great support.
