The first of the cross country championships of the season was held on a waterlogged course at Leverhulme Park in Bolton. Some of the courses had to be changed at the last minute because of the depth of water in the river which the athletes were meant to cross!
These championships form the basis for selection of the Greater Manchester Team for the UK Inter Counties Championships later in the season.
A depleted Under 13 Boys team managed to win bronze medals, led home by Joe Bentall in 3rd place, gaining him his first ever County vest.
He was supported by Oliver Choi 12th, Tom Bentall 13th and Alex Bailey 18th.
The Under 15 Boys team went one better and gained silver medals in their race. Xav O'Hare interrupted his school trip to the Lake District by finishing an excellent 4th and gaining his first county cross country team selection. He was followed home 3 seconds later by Jack Wilkinson who returned to form at the right time and handled the difficult conditions admirably. He has now finished 5th in the County Championships for 3 successive years. The team was completed by Cynog Williams in a solid 20th place.
In the following race our Under 17 Men's team won their championship for the 4th time in 5 years, beating Sale Harriers by one point. Colin Daly again showed great consistency when finishing in 4th place. He has now gained a top 5 finish in each of the last 5 years. The winning team was completed by the ever-improving Mac O'Malley 8th and Seamus Bradbury 9th. Also running well in this age group were Danny Shaw 15th, Mikey Kingston 16th and Abel Ashby 20th, competing in his first ever cross country race for Trafford AC.
A further team win follwed in the Under 20 Men's race where Danny Lawton's 2nd place gained him his 6th Inter Counties appearance. He was closely followed by Matt Sutton in an excellent 3rd place and Ben Jackson in 8th.
In the girls' events, Trafford only had 2 competitors. Emily Wolstencroft 51st in U13 Girls and Anna Baker 31st in U15 Girls, both handled the difficult conditions to complete their races in fine style.
