It's been a week of selection to prestigious competitions for Trafford's young athletes this week with the announcements of the Greater Manchester English Schools, World Youth (u18) and European u23 Teams.
The ESAA National Championships are the 4th largest athletics event in the World, with only Olympics, World Championships and Commonwealth Games having more athletes. Organised entirely by volunteer teachers, who bring together the best athletes in each County in England to compete for the honour of being the best athlete in the Country at their event.
Entry to the event is by virtue of athletes being selected by County Team Managers to represent their County. Prime consideration is given to performances at County Championships, but other outstanding performances at other events may be taken into consideration.
Nearly all the UK Olympic Athletics team members have featured in the ESAA Championships.
The Greater Manchester English Schools team contains seven Trafford athletes. Tameika Cuff (Derek Fraser) leads the way, with what will be her 5th and final English schools appearance, a tremendous record. She goes in the Senior girls 400m Hurdles, she's joined in the senior girls by Sinead Bent (Duncan Mason) in the 800m (2nd appearance) and Ellie Edwards (Iheanyi Ihediwa) in the 100m (4th appearance).
For the boys Daniel Lawton (Paul Shaw) is selected in his 3rd Finals for the Senior Boys 3000m; Rivaldo Brown (Derek Fraser) also in his 3rd finals is selected in the Inter Boys 100m hurdles. There are then two debuants in the Inter boys 1500m Colin Daly and Mikey Kingston (both Neil Canham).
The finals will take place at Gateshead International Stadium 10th and 11th July.
Naomi Ogbeta (Tom Cullen) has been selected to represent Great Britain at the World Youth Games in Cali, Columbia. Naomi's recent distance of 12.98m (an Under 18 British record) in winning the u20 Triple Jump at the National Championships, currently puts her 7th in the world. Naomi will travel to Columbia on 9th July. The qualifying round takes place on Friday 17th (3.50pm UK time) with the finals taking place on the Saturday (11pm UK time).
Seren Bundy-Davies (Steve Ball) has been selected for the European Athletics Under 23 Championships in Tallinn, Estonia at 400m. Seren is a strong favourite for the gold medal after jumping straight to the top of the European U23 rankings this weekend when winning in Nivelles, Belgium and lowering her personal best to 51.72, in her first outdoor 400m race of the summer. The 400m competition is a gruelling event, with the first round of races taking place on Thursday 9th July, Semi Final on Friday 10th July and the Final on Saturday 11th.
