Match 3 in this seasons Youth Development League Lower found us on the road again, this time to the UCLAN track at Preston for the fixture hosted by Lancaster and Morecambe AC.
It has been great watching this team develop, the support and encouragement that they give each other is wonderful to see. It was especially gratifying to see a couple of new faces to the team so readily accepted and made to feel welcome. Athletics is fundamentally an individual sport, but the team environment continues to be the best way for youngsters to develop within the sport.
On the day we finished a close second, which is a great result, and currently are third overall in the league series. Another good performance in match 4, and we could well achieve our best finish to date in the YDL.
As ever we must first thank those who enable us to compete, those who volunteer to officiate - Peter Snape (Timekeeper) Diana Khasa (Track Judge) and the field team of Mike Morrison, Mike Byran, Chris Morrison, Juliette Pemberton and Chizoma Dunn.
Once again, picking out highlights is hard given so many fine performances, top 3 places are mentioned below; but again I'll remind you that each and every individual's performance is important to the success of the team. This is your team and you all play your part.
u15b - Still not at their strongest, a couple of drop outs, a few unavailable and Cian at the Mason Trophy. Given that, the results are outstanding. in the field - Josh 3rd in HJ (an off day), 2nd in both Hammer and Discus, with Jarell 2nd in Discus (B) ; Dimarco 2nd (A) and Jarell 2nd (B) in Long Jump; Elliot (on his long awaited debut) 1st in Javelin. On the track, Laurie continues to improve his hurdling and finished 2nd, Jacob and Lewis were 3rd (A) & (B) in 800m, in 300m Elliott 3rd (A) & Jacob 1st (B); Jamall 1st (A) in both 100m & 200m with Dimarco 1st (B) in 100m & 2nd (B) in 200m. Jarrell, Elliott, Dimarco and Jamall won the 4x100m relay by a big margin.
u15g - With two debutants - Shivani and Esther and a welcome return to the track for Layla (Layla, along with Josh competed in the first ever YDL Lower matches) Sadly missing Abi and Evie to injury and illness. In the field the girls continue to improve, but on this occasion no top 3 places to report. On the track Sammy 2nd (A) in 800m (on same time as the winner); Esther 2nd (B) in 100m and Charlie 2nd (A) 100m and 1st (A) in 200m. Kelechi, Charlie, Tiffany and Esther combined to get narrowly pushed into 2nd in 4x100m relay.
u13b - Missing Charlie again and loosing Pierce to injury during the competition. What we lack in numbers in this team we make up for in spirit and it was good to see Aidan making his YDL debut. All the lads do what they can to ensure we cover as many events as practical. In the field Louis and Shea continue to shine at the jumps with 2nd place (A) and (B) in Long Jump and first place (A) and (B) in High Jump. On the track Louis 3rd (A) in hurdles, Samuel B 2nd in 200m (A) and 3rd (A) in 800m; Samuel H 1st (A) in 1500m supported by Oliver 2nd (B). The two Samuel's joined by Shea and Louis came a very creditable 2nd in the 4x100m relay.
u13g - We have been singing the praises of this team all season and they continue to develop and go from strength to strength. In the field it was great to see Alice (on debut) with a 2nd (B) in Shot. Emily continued her fine form with the Javelin to finish 3rd (A); Ellina and Grace, both with massive PB's, to finish 1st (A) and 3rd (B) in the Long Jump It is on the track where the true dominance of this team is shown. In match 1 we were delighted that they finished in the top two in each track event (bar hurdles); well in this match they went even better an won both (A) and (B) races for all track (again barring hurdles where Ellina and Neve continue to improve)

We have been reporting the number of graded performances for each YDL this season. The pleasing thing to note is that the number of graded performances has increased from match to match.22 in Match 1, 27 in Match 2 and a whopping 35 in this match.
